Right now you need to take 5 minutes out of your life to watch this powerful video by Cynthia Nixon. The Sex & The City star teamed up with Girls Girls Girls Magazine to create a video called “Be A Lady, They Said!” and it is safe to say this is a must-watch for not just women but for everyone!
In the video, Nixon relays a list of contradictions that are often told to girls from childhood through to adulthood.
“Be A Lady, They Said”
“Be a lady they said. Your skirt is too short; your shirt is too low. Don’t show so much skin, cover up. Leave something to the imagination. Don’t be a temptress. Men can’t control themselves. Men have needs. Look sexy. Look hot. Don’t be so provocative, you’re asking for it.
Compelling words spoken through the video along with confronting imagery of anal bleaching, full-frontal nudity, raw meat, scars and young women in full makeup and high heels.
Eat Up; Slim Down
Nixon then continues “Don’t be too fat; don’t be too thin. Eat up; slim down. Stop eating so much. Order a salad. Don’t eat carbs. God, you look like a skeleton!”
And it goes on and on describing the near impossible feat for women to ever be capable of living to the standards placed on us by society.
Viewed 3.9m Times & Growing
Since the video was released on Vimeo 3 days ago it has already been viewed a whopping 3.9m times and growing which is a testament to the incredible message.
The response to the trending #BeaLadyTheySaid and #BeALady hashtags has been mixed, but generally supportive.
All in all the video is a must watch but as the 3 minute video moves quickly we suggest watching a few times to really allow the full message to sink in. We would love to know your thought in the comments.
